We’re removing all the rust we can find and while sanding back a big patch of bubbling on the wing we realised there was no metal behind the paint... The hole was even bigger than that once we got the rest of the paint off.

If you like rust you’ll LOVE this car.

Can’t you buy a new wing for next to nothing? Easier and cheaper than replacing non-existent metal?

We’re just guna bodge it with filler. We don’t want to put any money into the car at all, so if it doesn’t affect safety (wing isn’t structural) we don’t care. Only money spent has been to get it running properly and getting the brakes in good shape.

Fair enough.

Well I like weight reduction so I guess thats pretty much the same thing

There’s so much rust/ weight reduction it’s basically an Ariel Atom already. Except it only has 50hp and is shaped like a box.

Is this the girlfriends car that her parents won’t let you touch, that had they just let you get on with it you would of likely caught most of it in time before it got nearly as bad?

If so, her parents need their heads banged together to knock some sense into their heads.

Na I ended up repairing a bit of that and painting cheap clear rust treatment on the rest.

This is my friends recent purchase for his first car. 7 previous owners and all of them beat it up so lots of work to do on it.

Oh, okay, but I still think you should bang her parents heads together for good measure. :)

Clean out the rear of that hole and epoxy some fibre glass onto the rear, fill with filler and paint. I had to do this once to an ambulance as it had a big bit of rust on the rear wheel arch and I only had one full day to fix it as it was due to be blessed.

Agreed, I like to care for my cars so neglecting them drives me mad haha.

Yeah I was thinking fibreglass it. It’s not a structural panel so no reason to spend much on fixing it (it is only an £80 car after all).

My grandad laughed when I showed him the hole and said “thats nothing my old car toolkit used to be fibreglass a pop rivet gun and some biscuit tins.” He drove some sketchy stuff when he was younger haha.

Ye’, they all did. Every time I see an old car on tv my grand dad says either he had one or a friend had one and what they used to do with them in the RAF. Apparently if you wanted your car repainted, it was dependent on what aircraft they were painting what colour that day, if you didn’t want that colour you looked on the job sheet for what was coming in and what colour it was due to be painted and then parked your car near the aircraft on that day and gave the knod to one of the guys and they took care of the rest.

Haha that’s pretty cool. Me and my grandad were digging through some of his old car photos. He had an immaculate orange Renault 12 with twin choke webers that he loved that was resprayed. Wasn’t done at the RAF though haha, think he had the mechanic at a bus depot do it or something.

Its pretty cool, UNTIL, he sees the same car for the tenth time and I get the same story for the tenth time. Lol.

They are a crazy old bunch.

Haha yeah you do have to prepare for some repeats. At least some of the stories are pretty cool. I never get tired of the time he almost ran over his motorcycle instructor on his practical test. Never did get his licence...

My grand father’s favourite story is how he fabricated a nose cone for an aircraft in Aden that had crashed that needed to get back to the U.K.

It is, till you hear it so many times you starting mouthing the words as he says them.

Apparently the on board radar worked better with the nose cone he made, than the original.

All part of being family, having to listen to the same story every couple of days haha.

That is pretty cool, being an engineering nerd I like to hear stories about mechanical stuff more than anything else. Probably why I get on with my grandad so well.

He also gets more sexist and racist year on year. Which makes it harder to want to listen to him. He had a go about people with disabilities, which didn’t go down too well as his daughter (my mother) is disabled, as is his grand daughter (my sister) and my step-father.

Yeah that’s a lot less nice to listen to. Thankfully my grandad doesn’t have many tendencies like that apart from a strong dislike for German people (mostly due to Vettels dominance in F1).
